Zipper Pouch Procurement Intelligence
Why canvas outperforms polyester for kitting
Cotton canvas (10-16 oz) outperforms 600D polyester for corporate kitting in two measurable ways: perceived value and imprint quality. Canvas accepts screen print, DTF, and embroidery without the halation artifacts polyester produces under heat transfer. For GWP cosmetic programs, canvas also avoids the "promo plastic" aesthetic that beauty buyers reject — a documented reason why Sephora, Credo Beauty, and Bluemercury have moved their kit packaging to canvas or recycled canvas since 2023.
Zipper selection is the single biggest cost lever
Zipper hardware drives roughly 18-25% of the per-unit landed cost on a small pouch. Nylon coil is the default economy option ($0.08-$0.14 per zipper at 5,000 units). Brass or metal-tooth zippers (YKK, SBS equivalents) move the unit cost up by $0.30-$0.60 but communicate premium positioning. Resin/Vislon (the large plastic-tooth style) sits between the two. If a buyer specifies "YKK" specifically, expect a 15-20% hardware premium and a 5-7 day lead-time extension for authentic stock.
Lining decisions hinge on contents, not aesthetics
Unlined canvas pouches work for tech organizers, pens, and onboarding kits — anything that will not leak or stain. Add a poly-satin lining ($0.20-$0.40 per unit) for cosmetic programs, toiletry kits, or anywhere a spill is possible. Waterproof nylon lining ($0.35-$0.55 per unit) is required for wet goods (travel pouches, beach kits, dopp kits). Skipping lining on cosmetic programs is the #1 reason kits get returned by beauty buyers.
MOQ scaling and lead-time math
Our MOQ of 500 units is set by screen-print setup economics — below 500, setup fees dominate per-unit cost. Expect 500 units in 3 weeks, 2,500 units in 3.5 weeks, and 10,000 units in 4-5 weeks after artwork approval. Air-freight adds roughly $0.40-$0.80 per unit on DDP terms for tight events; ocean freight is the default for orders with 4+ weeks of runway.
Canvas weight vs. construction vs. use case
